Zbrush - Week 8:

In this blog we will look at using ZModeler and making clothes that can be sculpted on to add folds and other interesting additions.

ZModeler:

Before using ZModeler you need to make sure the base models divisions are smaller as the regular cube has quite a lot of faces which you need to decrease so that we can properly use ZModeler. We changed the divisions from 5 down to 2 so that we wouldn't get a warning when using certain functions of the mode. We made sure to click both the delete higher and delete lower buttons so that it keeps the subdivisions at 2. Doing this will get rid of any layers of subdivisions that the shape still had.

We turned line fill (shift + f) on so that we could see our poly groups that were made whilst using ZModeler. To use ZModeler you need to select the brush BZM. The brush acts similarly to how Maya works where you can extrude however you need to hold the alt key to select the faces you want.

To select the different modes hover over the model and hold space and from that menu you can select the menu you would like to use such as extrude. Make sure to hover over the model when holding space for the menu as you will get a different menu come up if you don't hover over it. Once you have extrude selected in the menu you can close the menu by holding space and then clicking and dragging over the selected face to extrude it.

Like in Maya you can bevel parts of your model in ZBrush. It works in a similar way to how extrude works as you open the space bar menu then select bevel and select the edges you want to bevel.

Clothes:

An easy way to create clothes is going to subtool > extract > mask where you want the clothes to appear > extract this will give you a preview of what it would look like and you can edit different things about it such as changing the thickness of how it appears as it may preview thicker than you want the clothes to appear. Once you are happy with the preview and how it looks you can go ahead and click accept and it will create it and you can go ahead and sculpt onto it to make folds and different wrinkles in the fabric.

I wanted to try making a glove so I made a mask over the hand however when I clicked the preview button it was very big which for a glove unless you are going for more of a puffy glove won't be useful so I decided to change the thickness and then try again.

After changing the thickness of the glove a few times I found a thickness that I was happy with and that would work for a glove for what I wanted so I decided that I would leave it as it is and click accept so that it couldn't be changed unless I sculpted on it.
