Real Worlds - Week 1:

In this blog I will be talking about the project and what I need to complete for it and what I completed this week towards the project.

What the project is about:

We will be working with a company called Mantic Games which is a tabletop company that we are creating characters and buildings for. They are quite open to working with freelances on their designs and aren't too worried about the art style being too different to their own art style they use for the game which is quite helpful to know so that we aren't worrying about making sure that it was in the companies style if we weren't very confident with creating art in their style. We are working specifically on their tabletop game Deadzone so we will need to pick 2 factions out of the list of factions present in Deadzone and make sure our designs show that they are influenced by the original characters in the faction.

We were also tasked with coming up with an idea of how we would digitise a tabletop game and how we would make that work with the factions and already existing IP. We needed to think about the genre that we would want to make the game into and then research that genre and explain how the game would work.

What choices did I make towards the project:

We needed to decide on a pathway that we wanted to follow for the project as we had the choice to either go down the 2D pathway or the 3D. The 2D pathway included creating key art for the character that we create and the 3D pathway focuses on creating our character in 3D. There are two parts to the project with the first being to create a character design and the second being to create a building design. Each part of the project is separated by the formative so when the formative date is done we need to focus on creating the building and should have the character done or nearly done at that point.

I decided that I wanted to focus on 3D for the first part of the project and if I wanted to I could do 2D for the environment art however I believe that I will stick with doing 3D for both designs however I wanted to leave that decision to when I have finished the first part of the project to decide.

What I would need to create for the project:

    Part 1:

- x30 Thumbnails for each character (60 in total)
- Backstory for both characters
- Any necessary studies
- Orthographics
- Equipment
- 1 Character modelled, rigged & textured

    Part 2:

- x30 thumbnails for building
- x10 thumbnails for each piece of furniture
- Orthographics
- x1 building
- x3 drawings of furniture
- x1 textured building & street furniture

Which factions I chose for my project:

I chose the Asterians and the Enforcers for my project as I liked the look of the robots that the Asterians use in fights so that they don't have to be in danger as they can control these from afar and I chose the Enforcers as I liked how angular their armour was and thought that the character would be good to pick as I had quite a few ideas for them.

What I started this week:

I started working on the research for the project which is located in the blog I have called research dossier (Here) so that I could make sure that I got a head start on finding out about the IP so I could start working on the thumbnails in the next few weeks.

I also started working on the project management for the project which included me creating different documents such as a Gantt chart and Kanban chart so that I could keep track of what I needed to start working on at what stage of the project. I created the Kanban chart so that I could keep track of what I had already done and what I still needed to complete which helps me more than just a Gantt chart on its own would as using both of them lets me see what I should work on that day depending on what I have to get done that week and my Kanban chart helps me see which part of the project is already done and I can compare them both to see if I am ahead of schedule, in front or behind.
