Industry Practice - Week 9:

In this blog we will be choosing a role model in the industry and researching their job roles and other information about them.

Ideal Job role:

My ideal job role in the industry would be to work creating 3D models for games, specifically weapons and props such as items found in explorable areas such as tables / items left on them for example or other items seen around a space.

Role Model in the Games Art Industry:

My chosen role model is Giulia Marchetti who is a 3D artist that uses blender to create 3D character models. I have chosen them as even though they use blender to create their characters I find that the way they work can be used and transferred to using it in maya. I think their art style is really cute too and I would like to take inspiration from the way they create models and their art style to be able to create models of my own. Specifically I took inspiration from some of the weapons / props they have created such as the spade from their goth witch character and the cup with the mushrooms in from their Witch character as I like the art style used for them as they are quite simple.

They are currently working as a freelancer working with different clients over the world and creating timelapses of their 3D models on YouTube.  Before working freelance they started by studying illustration and graphic design before then creating a studio with their partner working as a 2D illustrator. She started to learn 3D in her free time and found that she was spending more time creating models in 3D than she was creating in 2D.

I want to use their workflow to inform my own modelling workflow. Their own workflow is creating a blockout and then moving onto sculpting that and clothes creation using the base sculpt. After that she will go onto modelling accessories and then will create an adaptation version of the base mesh that has clean topology before moving onto vertex painting the face and body. Then will move onto posing the body, creating hair using the particle system and rendering the scene. I want to use the same process of creating a blockout and then sculpting on it to add detail, clothing and accessories as I think it is quite a good method and can be used to create models quite quickly.

The games industry is seeing a rise in female artists and this gives me more opportunity to get a job in the industry due to this. With my knowledge being in maya it will help me to be able to get a job in the industry as maya is the industry standard which will mean more jobs are available for me to apply for.

I am quite good at using different 3D software and can work in a range of them however I prefer to work in maya as I have more knowledge in maya and its industry standard. Due to my knowledge in 3D software's, I know when its best to use certain software's over others due to the different tools that are available in each. Even though I do prefer working in 3D, I do have knowledge of 2D which is helpful for creating a plan of what I need to create as well as knowing how things will work or run. For example to be a good game creator its essential to know how the game will play and what is needed to be created so that it can be accurately created for the game. Other skills that are needed to be a good 3D artist are to be able to collaborate with others in your team and organisation. I feel that I work well in a team which is a good skill to have however I do get anxious about working together with others and find it hard to confront someone if they aren't holding their weight up in the team or if other things go wrong. On the other hand I am good at organising my work and making sure all my files are where they should be however when it comes to time management it is something I still need to work on.
